Packaging Design.
Regulatory, labeling requirements and other key elements to note regarding the origin and
production of Irish spirits, speciically Irish Whiskey, Irish Cream Liqueurs and Poitin.
The labeling requirements of Irish produced spirits are governed and deined by EU
regulation. It is absolutely imperative that your product and packaging are compliant with the
relevant regulations.They must be adhered to and therefore incorporated into your overall
pack design for your product. Please note the following:
Spirit drinks are classiied into categories according to the deinitions laid down in Annex
II to Regulation (EC) No 110/2008 e.g. Rum, whiskey/whisky, brandy, vodka. This is
important when it comes to the naming you choose for your new drink brand and ofering.
Regulation (EC) No 110/2008 lays down rules on the deinition, description, presentation
and labelling of spirit drinks as well as on the protection of geographical indications of spirit
drinks. It applies to all spirit drinks placed on the market in the European Union (EU) whether
produced in the EU or in third countries, as well as to those produced in the EU for export. It
also sets out the rules concerning the use of geographical indicators (GIs) on speciic spirit
drinks in the description of your product, namely Irish Whiskey, Irish Cream Liqueurs and
Poitin.
